Juan Franco Martinez (1932-2015), aka Juan de la Plata, was an authority on flamenco and was the founder and long-time director of la Catedra de Flamencologia y Estudios Folkloricos Andaluces, at el Centro Andaluz de Documentacion del Flamenco in Jerez. In 1997 he received the national honor of the Circulo de Bellas Artes for his continuing work in favor of flamenco art. In 2013, the Jerez city council named a park after him, in the La Plata neighborhood.
