Clement Clarke Moore (1779-1863) was a professor of General Theological Seminary in New York City. He wrote The Night Before Christmas for his children in 1822 (it was originally titled "A Visit from St. Nicholas)".

Tomie de Paola has set the poem in the 1840's, using his own home in a small New Hampshire village as a model. His borders are based on designs from New England quilts, many of which he owns.

Thomas "Tomie" dePaola (1934-2020) was a much lauded American writer and illustrator of children's books. He was educated at the Pratt Institute and the California College of Arts and Crafts and had a career that spanned more than half a century. In 2011, he received the Children's Literature Legacy Award for his lifetime contribution to American children's literature.
