Trina Schart Hyman (1939-2004) was an American illustrator of children's books. Her work received the Caldecott Medal, the Golden Kite Award, and three Caldecott Honors.
Claudia Paley was an American author who lived in London at the time Benjamin the True was published. She had moved to London in 1965 with her husband, Tom Paley, a folk musician from New York who had worked with Woodie Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Lead Belly (and had given lessons to Ry Cooder and Jerry Garcia), and was a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers. Claudia and Tom had a two-year old son named Benjamin.
