Desire is the English translation of Jean Fayard's 1931 Prix Goncourt winning novel "Mal d'Amour". The Goncourt Prize is awarded each year by the Goncourt Academy for the most outstanding imaginative novel.
The story, which is extremely French in subject and treatment, is that of an inexperienced and sensitive young man reaching out toward love, its fulfillment, and its outcome. He is enamored of an indulgent and easy-going woman, who is the mistress of a great English painter. At first he loves her only in a sensual way; like all the young men of his generation, he has a great scorn for sentimentality. But on the appearance of other men in her life, he discovers hat he is no immune to common jealousies and unhappiness.
