A biography and career narrative of Emma Abbott (1850-1891), an American operatic soprano and impresario, which was written by her friend Sadie Martin.
Encouraged by Clara Louise Kellogg to pursue an opera carreer, Abbott embarked in her studies under Achille Errani in New York, and continued under Antonio Sangiovanni in Milan and with Mathilde Marchesi, Pierre Francois Wartel and Enrico Delle Sedie in Paris. She made her debut with the Royal Opera in London in 1876 and returned to the United States in 1877. The following year she and her husband established the successful Abbott English Opera Company. She was very popular and was known as "the people's prima dona" and the "queen of song.
