Antonio Ruiz Soler (1921-1996), professionally known as "Antonio," was a world famous Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer and dance director. Between 1928 and 1952 he performed with a dance partner and together they were billed as Rosario y Antonio.
The author, the British dance historian and critic Cyril Beaumont (1891-1976), first met Antonio in June 1951 at the Spanish Institute in London. He opens with his impressions of the dancer and gives him a brief biographical and career overview. The greater part of the book describes, one by one, the various dance numbers Antonio performed, including Danza No. 10, Zorongo, Los Lagarteranos, Serranas, Baile Flamenco, Goyescas, Jarana Yucateca, Zapateado, Cana, Bulerias, and Bolero. The stage scene, costumes, entrance and movements of the dance on stage, and accompaniment, are described in more or less detail for each.
