A descriptive account of a 240-acre farm in Northampton County, eastern Pennsylvania, known as the Cedar Valley Farm even prior to its purchase by the author in 1918. In the year after this book was published, Hart purchased the neighboring old Carpenter farm, an adjoining 130 acres, making it one of the largest farms in the area.

Hart describes the physical character of the farm in some detail, with chapters on the farm's rocks, springs, trees, and roads. Being a chemist by profession, he devotes several chapters to soil chemistry, covering gases in the soil, soil fertility, poisons in the soil, soil bacteria, nitrification, sulphates in the soil, colloids of the soil, soil temperature, potash for farming, etc. In the less technical chapters he makes account of travels around eastern Pennsylvania, his visits to various local forges and furnaces, details of practical farm maintenance and development, a bit of his own poetry and story telling, farming in Japan and the Far East, and old English farming.

Edward Hart (1854-1931) was an educator and inventor, a resident of Easton, Pennsylvania, and professor of chemistry at Lafayette College, where he had been a member of the faculty since 1874. As noted in Our Farm at Cedar Valley, the author had been a friend of Gifford Pinchot.
