Dr. Holmes Whittier Merton (ca. 1861-1948) was a nationally known phrenologist, whose studies spanned more than six decades and influenced the teaching of physiology in high schools and colleges in the late 1800s. His work was also utilized by the U.S. military and the Federal Government for the selection of personnel. He was the dean and president of the Merton Institute of Vocational Counseling in New York City and had a successful practice there for more than three decades.
