The children who wrote down these stories were all in Indian schools (which are identified) where the teachers were helping them work and learn through their own cultural heritage. Byrd Baylor (b. 1924) is an American novelist, essayist, and author of picture books for children. Four of her books have been designated Caldecott Honor books. She is a resident of Arizona.
