Harvey Scott, a longtime editor and owner of The Oregonian, read the dramatic works on a daily basis and considered him to be the leading moralist and the foremost thinker of his time, as well as the greatest writer of English.
Inscribed by Leslie M. Scott to Elmer David DeWert. DeWert was the hand compositor/typesetter for The Oregonian between 1884 and 1907.
Leslie M. Scott (1878-1968) was a writer, historian, editor, and the son of Harvey W. Scott. Leslie served as an reporter and later editor of The Oregonian between 1898 and 1910, co-edited with his father the six volume History of the Oregon Country, was the Oregon State Treasurer from 1941-1949, and was a member of Oregon Historical Society's Board of Directors between 1913 and 1956.
