Originally published in 1980 under the title "Bo Rabbit Smart for True: Folktales from the Gullah," this is the 1995 revised edition. It includes two new illustrated tales and received the 1996 Anne Izard Storytellers' Choice Award.

Bo Rabbit Smart for True is a collection of illustrated stories drawn from the folktales of the African-American Gullah people, the creole-speaking residents of the Sea Islands along the coast of South Carolina and Georgia. Priscilla Jaquith based her retelling of these humorous tales on their oral tradition, using the Gullah's lilting, poetic language, saving its authentic flavor and cadence.

Clever Bo Rabbit doesn't let too much go past him. He outwits Elephant and Whale, teaches Alligator a lesson, puts Rattlesnake back in his place, and is smart enough to learn from someone even smarter than he is.

Priscilla Hicks Jaquith (1908-2004) was born in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Cornell University. She had a successful career as a newspaper reporter, publicist for the Rockefeller Center, and writer for popular magazines.

Ed Tse-chun Young (b. 1931) is a Chinese-born American illustrator and writer of children's books. For his work he has received high recognition, including a Caldecott Medal, two Caldecott Honors, multiple Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards, the Washington Irving Children's Choice Book Award, and the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators.
