Beat Not the Bones was the inaugural winner of the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel (1954). Set in colonial New Guinea, a young woman searches to find out the truth behind the death of her husband, the colonial administration's chief anthropologist. She fights "the heat, the insects, and the human beings who had been distorted by the tropics, by drink, by fears of themselves and their wretched lives."
Charlotte Jay is the pseudonym of the Australian mystery writer Geraldine Halls (1919-1996). She lived in New Guinea between 1948 and 1950 where she had a job that afforded her the opportunity to travel around the coast to some of the most primitive and least accessible parts of the island.
