The illustrator, Steven Castle Kellogg (b.1941), is an author and illustrator of children's books. In 1989 he won the Regina Medal for his "continued, distinguished contribution to children's literature." He has also been the recipient of the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and the Irma Black Award for Excellence in Children's Literature.
