Inscribed "For Helen Jeffrey as a slight return / for the pleasure that her music / gave me. / Mabel L. Robinson". Helen Jeffrey (1891-1937) had been a highly regarded concert violinist, who had performed multiple times at both Carnegie Hall and Aeolian Hall, and with various symphony orchestras.
Bright Island tells the story of Thankful Curtis, a girl who having grown up on a small island off the coast of Maine, reluctantly agrees leave the island, and her sailboat, to attend school on the mainland for her senior year. She finds the uncharted waters of the sophisticated school difficult to navigate.
Mabel Louise Robinson (1874-1962) was an American writer of children's books. Lynd Ward (1905-1985) was an America illustrator and author, known for his wordless novels composed of wood engravings.
