A vividly written, "somewhat" biographical story of a modern Japanese man. A culturally insightful account, with discussion contrasting Anglo and Japanese ethics and cultural norms, the story ranges from a mischievous boyhood, family and village life, through an education and time at Doshisha College and Waseda University, to his involvement in the Tokyo street car riots, and the great earthquake of 1923.

John Paris was the pseudonym of Frank Ashton-Gwatkin (1889-1976), a British novelist and diplomat. Prior to 1929 he was stationed in the Far East, and served in the Consular Service, the Foreign Office, and the Diplomatic Service.
