In this zany tale, the poor farmer Appelard is aided by a wayward baby rhinoceros (whom he calls "Liverwurst") who has a fondness for mushrooms. When Liverwurst's mother shows up to rescue him, the town is upended in no little amount of mayhem.
Mercer Mayer (b. 1943) is an American children's author and illustrator. He wrote two books in the Liverwrust series. The second volume, Liverwurst is Missing, was published in 1981.
Illustrated by Steven Kellogg (b.1941), an author and illustrator of more than 90 children's books. In 1989 he won the Regina Medal for his "continued, distinguished contribution to children's literature." He has also been the recipient of the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and the Irma Black Award for Excellence in Children's Literature.
