The story of Cricket, a Shetland pony, told in a few phases: first with Captain John's circus where Cricket gets befriended and protected by "Mom," the leader of the elephants; then, when cold season comes around, Captain John moves Cricket to performing as a bucking pony in theatre shows, and finally Cricket enjoys a pleasant life on a farm with children, his friends, and their make-believe Big Barnyard Circus. Berta Hader (1890-1976) and Elmer Hader (1889-1973) were a Caldecott Medal-winning American couple who jointly illustrated and wrote children's books.
