A collection of anecdotes and incidents from the history of Sing Sing Prison, written by the warden, and taken from the prison's records. Lewis E. Lawes served as Sing Sing's warden from 1920 to 1941. He states in his introduction that the primary purpose of these stories, in their portrayal "of the motives, the attitudes, the events, and the consequences of the actions which result in men and women being sent to prison, is to stress that fact that prisoners are, first and last, human beings--and should be treated as such.
