A novel set in a mining-camp of Kerbyville in southern Oregon in the mid-1850's. The town of Kerbyville (now called Kerby), was at the time the chief camp of the Althouse Creek mining district.

The author, Dennis Herbert Stovall (1878-1941), was short story writer, novelist and journalist, and was known for writing about outdoor topics. He was born in Texas, graduated from Oregon Agricultural College in 1898, and after college worked for various Oregon newspapers. He moved to California around 1920.
