1907 South Africa travel book, describing the cities and countryside (including the Cango Caves and the Karroo basin), its culture (both European and African), diamond mines, flora, education system, missions, Cape Town and environs, Kimberley, travel from Kimberley to Victoria Falls, Johannesburg, Durban, and provides an account of the Anglo-Boer War.

Adelaide Smith (1870-1960) was an American mathematician who studied with David Hilbert at the University of Gottingen, before traveling to South Africa to teach at Huguenot College, at that time the only women's college south of the Equator. She served as the chair of the mathematics departments at both the University of Johannesburg and the University of California. She also taught mathematics at Mills College and was the principal at the Wellesley School in Berkeley, California.

Jennie R. White (b. circa 1873), prior to teaching history, physics and mathematics at Huguenot College, had graduated from the University of California (1894) and worked as a teacher at Marysville High School in Yuba County. After returning to the states, she taught at Alameda High School.
