Photographs of houses in China made by Henry Inn during his tenth trip to China in 1936 and earlier, with five accompanying essays. Some of the houses and gardens shown had never photographed before and were destroyed by Japanese bombs prior to this publication.

Henry Inn (1899-1994) was born in Canton, China and immigrated to Hawaii in 1908. He was a photographer, art collector, designer, and real estate developer.
Shao Chang Lee (1891-1977) was born in Canton and received degrees from both Chinese colleges and from Yale and Columbia. Between 1922 and 1943, he was a lecturer, professor, and head of the Department of Oriental Studies at the University of Hawaii. In 1943, he began his tenure at the University of Michigan where he was the head of the Department of Foreign Studies.
